Our music program incorporates singing, music reading, instrument playing, movement, and dance using the Orff and Kodály music methods. The goal of the program is the expose students to a wide variety of music, to help students appreciate the musical arts, to set a foundation for future musical participation, and to develop student talent in order to praise God. Students in Kindergarten through 8th grade have music twice a week with a trained music specialist. The entire school gathers twice a year for concerts: a Christmas Concert in December and a Spring Concert in May. Other performance opportunities occur throughout the school year in various community settings. Students also regularly attend student concerts of the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, Skylight Theatre Company, and other professional groups in Milwaukee.
At the fourth grade level, students are able to take part in the band program. For an additional fee, individual or group lessons are available. The students will use the Accent on Achievement method books. Students are able to participate in a beginners band, intermediate band or middle school band. The bands perform at school concerts, and at various times in the community. Opportunities for strings and piano lessons are also available.
In the spring, BCS middle school students have an opportunity to participate in an annual music festival with other students from around the state. During the day of the festival, students perform vocal and instrumental solos and ensembles for an adjudicator who rates their performance and gives valuable feedback on the performance. All BCS students are required to be a part of this portion of the festival at some point during their middle school experience. The festival day concludes with an evening concert featuring a mass band and choir made up of all students participating in the festival. Click here for more details.
