The BCS LEGO Team competes in the US chapter of FIRST LEGO League. The mission of FIRST is to “inspire young people to be science and technology leaders and innovators, by engaging them in exciting Mentor-based programs that build science, engineering, and technology skills, that inspire innovation, and that foster well-rounded life capabilities including self-confidence, communication, and leadership.” FIRST LEGO is open to 4th through 8th graders. The BCS LEGO Team was established in 2017 to give the students of BCS a chance to experience and grow in these real-world skills, and to also provide an opportunity to work with other likeminded groups in the FIRST LEGO League.
The FIRST LEGO season typically starts the end of August, but our group operates year round. When not trying to create a LEGOrobot to attack the yearly challenge or trying to create a presentation of a proposed solution to a real-world problem, we are working together to improve our skills as a team for the next season.
Students who will be at least in 4th grade in September can join any time between April and the first week of September of the same calendar year. (Exceptions can be made for starting later depending on circumstances, and will need to be discussed with the team’s head coach.) The FIRST LEGO season runs August through at least December of the school year. (It may run as late as April if the team succeeds in advancing to state, US, and world tournaments.) Time commitment for the team during the season is two team meetings weekly of two hours each and occasional planned trips to meet with other teams, to do project research, and to join in league competitions.
Inquiries or requests to join the team can be sent to email@example.com.
