Mrs. Knutson joined the Brookfield Christian School staff in the Fall of 2014 as our general music and choral teacher. She has been teaching music since she graduated from Dordt College with a degree in Choral and Instrumental Music Education. She also holds a Masters degree in Choral Conducting from the University of Minnesota.
Mrs. Knutson has teaching experience from age 3 to adult, but most recently taught at Lakeland College. She currently directs the community-based Cantare Chorale in South Milwaukee, and also gives piano and voice lessons. Lani, her husband and two sons reside in Wauwatosa.
Ephesians 5:8 is one of her favorite verses: “For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light.” She says, “I love the simplicity of it and how it easily explains where we have been, where we are now, and where we should go as Christians. The imagery of light and dark are so easy to understand. Also, there have been some amazing choral works composed using this text.”
Mrs. Knutson’s Mission Statement:
“Music has been an important part of my life since I was a child. Through the commitment of gifted and devoted music educators, I was able to develop my talents and skills as a musician, singer, pianist, instrumentalist, and conductor. As I matured, music became a way for me to express myself, my faith, and my emotions and to connect with others in musical communities. Now as a teacher, I am able to pass along my passion for music to students of all ages. I believe music education is an important part of a student’s education at any level and is important for a student’s development as a caring and loving human being.
I believe each student I encounter is an important and unique child of God with specific gifts and talents. I am charged with the task of helping students develop these gifts and talents in music and other areas of life. Music will not be every student’s passion or strength, but I believe it is my job to provide musical opportunities for all levels of talent and interest and to encourage students to pursue excellence in all musical endeavors. I give students the skills to be able to accomplish musical goals through hard work, focus, and development of skill. I endeavor to teach to such a high level of excellence that my students are inspired to practice this same excellence in music and in life.”
