A 2020 Back to School Prayer

a mother and a child praying together

We're grateful to Pastor Brandon Haan of Brookfield Christian Reformed Church for writing this back to school prayer for us as we begin the 2020-2021 school year!

Lord God—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit—we praise you and thank you that you are a good, good God. You are always faithful, always gracious, and always willing to listen to us. It’s with that in mind that we come to you at the start of this new school year.

God, we admit these are strange times. We feel the brokenness of our world in so many ways, and we know that this is not the way you wanted things to be. We know this is not how you created your world. And we know that this is not what you intended for us as your people.

So forgive us, Lord. Heal our hearts. Cleanse us of our sin. Restore us to the kind of people you have called us to be. May we indeed be people who love not only with our words, but with our actions too.

As we begin this new school year, we pray for our community. Help us to encourage each other in these difficult times. Keep us safe and healthy, especially as we take extra steps to protect ourselves from the coronavirus pandemic. Unite us in your Spirit so that we may be one as you are one. Sustain our teachers and staff and give them energy and strength as they prepare to teach and lead. Provide our students and families with confidence and courage as we begin to gather again. And give us all a full measure of wisdom and humility as we seek to navigate the many questions and concerns we’re facing.

We thank you for your faithfulness to Brookfield Christian School year after year—57 years of faithfulness, in fact! And we know that this year will be no different. In all these things, and in everything else that might come up this year, help us to always look to you, the author of our lives, the sustainer of our days, and the pioneer and perfecter of our faith.

It’s in the sure name of Jesus Christ we pray, Amen.
