BCS Dress Code

The students at Brookfield Christian School are a witness to our community.  In an effort to honor God in all areas of our lives, we ask that student appearance and clothing be modest and appropriately reflect a Christian lifestyle.  The purpose of the dress code at BCS is to establish guidelines where students have the freedom to express their individuality while maintaining proper standards for a Christian learning environment.  As part of living in community, extremes in dress or grooming should be avoided so as not to draw undue attention to the individual or distract from education.  This policy covers all school-related events and activities both inside and outside of the classroom.

The following guidelines further clarify the expected standards:

  1. Hair should be neat in appearance.
  2. Students may select attire from the following types of clothing.
    • Shirts and tops with short or long sleeves that cover the shoulder
    • Jeans, khakis, or other types of pants
    • Leggings
    • Shorts
      • Shorts should be appropriate in length.  While we assume parents and students will use discretion, if there is a question or concern about the length, BCS defines appropriate as meeting one of the following three guidelines for length:
        • Shorts should be at mid-thigh level.
        • Shorts should have at least a 6-inch inseam.
        • With shoulders relaxed, arms straight by the side, and fingertips extended, shorts must be at the fingertips.
      • Track/running shorts that are shorter in length may only be worn during PE class and spandex shorts should be worn underneath.
    • Dresses
      • Please note that dresses and skirts must be at mid-thigh level.
      • We also encourage shorts, or an appropriate alternative, to be worn underneath dresses as the level of activity dictates.
  3. Appropriate footwear is required and must be worn at all times.
  4. Boots, snow pants, and warm jackets are required for play in the snow in the winter.
  5. The following apparel is considered inappropriate:
    • Skin-tight clothing
    • Pajamas and loungewear
    • Frayed and cut-off clothing
    • Clothing with rips, tears, and holes that is not modest in appearance
    • Clothing which promotes questionable products, activities, lifestyles, or musical groups
    • Half shirts or shirts that show a bare midriff, undershirts worn by themselves, backless shirts, tight tops with the outline of the bra showing
  6. Misc. Items:
    • Undergarments must be worn and may not show.
    • Girls may not show cleavage (standing, sitting, or bending over).
    • Hats, hoods, or sunglasses may not be worn in the classroom.
    • No visible body piercing is acceptable except for modest ear piercing for girls.
It is the responsibility of students and parents to see to it that the dress code is followed.  Teachers will address violations when they observe them and notify the office.  The judgment of office personnel is final as to what is or is not appropriate.  Parents will be contacted and asked to bring a change of clothes for any student who is in violation of the dress code.  If a parent is unable to do so, students will be asked to change into clothing provided by the school.
